Youth Nordic Ski Club

Kids ages 5 and older are invited to learn to cross country ski. The eight week program begins January 9th and meets from 3:45 – 5 :00 p.m.at the VFW in Viroqua. Students will learn the basics of nordic skiing, including turning, stopping and getting up from a fall. The class is also designed for those who already know the basics and would like to improve their skills.

The class is being taught by volunteer coaches with past experience in the program and a love for the sport.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to have fun outdoors in winter weather,” said Alycann Taylor, a Vernon Trails Volunteer. “We are lucky to live in an area that offers so much good skiing. Vernon County is perfect for Nordic skiing with more than 30 miles of cross country ski trails; mostly ungroomed at trails in the County Parks. Groomed ski trail opportunities are available at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, Wildcat Mountain, and right here in Viroqua at the VFW and Viroqua Hills Golf Course. Nordic skiing is a skill these students will be able to use throughout their lives.”

Registration for the class is $40. Participants without their own ski equipment can lease equipment from Bluedog Cycle. The $60 rental fee allows students to keep the skis for the entire eight weeks, so they can take advantage of opportunities to ski during non-class times.

The Snowflake Nordic Ski Program is sponsored by Vernon Trails, a non-profit organization dedicated to building and maintaining shared use trails in Vernon County.
